Dextrin is a very commonly used binder in England, it is formed by the partial hydrolysis of starch, which is commonly achieved by cooking corn flour in an oven. The dextrin being sold is of commercial origin and so often better quality than the home made powder as a binder, but is unsuitable for food use. Dextrin is slightly hygroscopic and so it is unadvisable to use more than 5% in any compositions.
